Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Q&A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP uses a concentrated source of platelets from your blood to regenerate newer, healthier, younger-looking skin cells or hair follicles. The bodys rejuvenation ability can be potentiated with delivery of growth factors and stem cells. PRP therapy provides a mechanism for doing this using your own skin and tissue. Since PRP is not foreign tissue, foreign tissue reactions are eliminated. PRP also helps you heal from injuries and break free from chronic pain.

Dermatology Specialists of Atlanta offers PRP for hair-loss treatments and anti-aging skin treatments with or without Juvéderm®, Restylane®, or other dermal fillers that enhance the appearance of aging skin.

What are the advantages of PRP?

The bodys rejuvenation ability can be potentiated with delivery of growth factors and stem cells. PCP provides a mechanism for doing this using your own skin and tissue. Since PRP is not foreign tissue, foreign tissue reactions are eliminated. Choosing PRP at Dermatology Specialists of Atlanta offers superior benefits for your skin and hair. Examples include:

  • Beautiful, healthy skin
  • Fewer lines and wrinkles
  • Reduction in skin imperfections
  • Firmer, tighter skin
  • Reduced pore sizes
  • Younger-looking appearance
  • Reduction in acne scarring
  • Stronger, fuller, thicker hair
  • Increased collagen elastin, and blood vessel production

Because PRP uses platelets from your blood, the treatment is entirely natural. PRP works by stimulating new cell growth without invasive procedures.

Is PRP right for me?

The Dermatology Specialists of Atlanta team determines if PRP is right for you after discussing your desired results, reviewing your medical history, and examining your skin and hair. They tailor each treatment based on what’s best for you and let you know what to expect during PRP procedures.

What happens during PRP treatments?

The first step of PRP treatment is taking a blood sample from one of your veins. The Dermatology Specialists of Atlanta team then uses a centrifuge to obtain a concentrated source of platelets from the blood sample.

Local anesthesia is applied to the treatment areas.  Our medical assistants reintroduce the PRP to your body via injections or by combining PRP with microneedling to enhance its effects on your skin or hair. The length of time each treatment lasts depends on the size of the treatment area and which PRP procedure you undergo.

After the procedure, the treatment area may be temporarily tender, swollen, or red. It often takes three or four weeks for your body to regenerate new cells and anti-aging results to appear.

How often should I schedule PRP procedures?

Your dermatology specialist often recommends a series of PRP treatments as a package of three to six sessions. They may suggest treatment every month until you achieve the desired results, as well as periodic maintenance sessions.
